Roslyn Heights & Manhattan NY

A smiling woman after periodontal appointment at Edward I. Jutkowitz, D.M.D., P.C. - Periodontics and Implantology Your mouth is a small part of your body, but it has many essential responsibilities. Taking care of your mouth is important for keeping it healthy and ensuring that it can function properly. While most people focus on the teeth, they are not the only important part of your mouth. There are many essential components in your mouth, including your gums. When issues with your gums, and other supporting structures, arise, it may be time to call a periodontist. Edward I. Jutkowitz, D.M.D., P.C. - Periodontics and Implantology can help.

What Is a Periodontist?

Periodontics is one of 9 dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in periodontics. This field focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of oral health issues that affect the gums as well as the other supporting structures of your teeth. We are also experts in the placement of dental implants.

As periodontists, we can provide treatment for more advanced stages of gum disease. We can provide a wide array of different treatments for restoring your oral health following a diagnosis of gum disease. These treatments include scaling and root planing, periodontal maintenance, and even surgical treatments as well.

Signs You Need to See a Periodontist

There are several signs that can point toward the need to see a periodontist. Reasons to schedule an appointment include:
•  Bleeding gums when you brush, floss, or even eat. Bleeding gums is one of the warning signs of the earliest stage of gum disease, called gingivitis.
•  Noticing gum recession. Gum recession often occurs as a result of advancing gum disease. As your infected tissues die, the gumline begins to recede. Your teeth become more exposed, increasing your risk for cavities. The roots of your teeth are exposed, leading to sensitivity. Bacteria can also reach your periodontal ligaments and jawbone, causing these structures to weaken.
•  A change in your bite. We can help to determine the cause of this change, allowing you to get the treatment you need right away.
•  Loose teeth. Teeth become loose can indicate that bacteria have begun to attack your periodontal ligaments and your jawbone. If this continues, your teeth may eventually fall out or need to be extracted.

How a Periodontist Can Help

When you arrive for your appointment, we perform a thorough oral exam of your mouth. We look over your gums and take x-rays to examine your jawbone. We also assess the general condition of your teeth. Once we have diagnosed the exact issues plaguing your mouth, we can then provide you with the appropriate treatment. Treatments we can provide include:
•  Scaling and root planing. This is a deep cleaning of your teeth. It is minimally invasive and allows us to clean the surfaces of your teeth both above and below the gumline.
•  Pocket reduction surgery. This is a surgical treatment performed when your pockets are too deep.
•  Osseous surgery. This surgical procedure involves smoothing your jawbone to help your mouth heal.
•  Bone grafting. A bone graft may be performed to replace missing bone mass. This is often done if the bone has lost too much mass to successfully support dental implants.
•  Dental implants. Implants provide a solution for replacing missing teeth.
