Effects of Losing Multiple Teeth

Losing several teeth has many significant effects on your entire life.
•  The quality of your smile decreases, which can impact your confidence.
•  Biting and chewing become more challenging. The inability to chew properly can affect your digestion, which can eventually lead to malnutrition.
•  You may develop a lisp or other complications speaking.
•  Biting and chewing forces are uneven, leaving some teeth susceptible to greater pressure than normal. This can lead to tooth damage.
•  Your risk for cavities and gum disease increases.
•  Your jawbone begins to lose bone mass due to a lack of stimulation. This can cause your adjacent teeth to shift out of alignment, altering your bite and leading to issues such as bruxism and TMJ disorder.

What Is a Multiple Tooth Implant?

A multiple tooth implant is a treatment that uses dental implants to provide support for a section of replacement teeth. It is typically used to replace two or more consecutive missing teeth. Dental implants consist of 3 components.
•  Posts. The posts, which are typically made from a titanium alloy, are the pieces that are surgically implanted into your jawbone. Your bone fuses to the posts in a process called osseointegration. This process turns the posts into strong, secure roots that support your replacement teeth. The number of posts used for a multiple tooth implant depends upon the number of teeth being replaced and the condition of your jawbone.
•  Abutments. The abutments, also called the connectors, provide stability for your dental restorations. They sit between your replacement teeth and the posts.
•  Crowns. The crowns are your replacement teeth. They are made from ceramic and look exactly like real teeth. After your implants have been placed, there is no telling the difference between your real teeth and your restorations.

How Is a Multiple Tooth Implant Placed?

Placing a multiple tooth implant requires surgery. Surgery is performed under a local anesthetic and sedation. The anesthetic ensures that you do not feel any pain while sedation helps you to feel relaxed and calm. When we are ready to begin, we create small incisions in your gum tissue. Next, we drill small holes into your jawbone and place the implant posts directly inside. Your gums are sutured closed around the posts, and temporary teeth are placed.

Healing after your multiple tooth implant placement can take several weeks to several months. Your bone gradually fuses to the posts during this time. Several follow up appointments allow us to monitor your progress, making sure that you are healing properly and there are no issues. When you have fully healed, the temporary teeth are removed, and the abutments are placed on the posts. We then take an impression of your mouth. The impression is used to design and create your replacement teeth, which are secured into place with small screws.

Benefits of a Multiple Tooth Implant

A multiple tooth implant has many benefits.
•  It looks, feels, and functions exactly like your real teeth.
•  You can bite and normally chew, which helps to improve digestion.
•  Your oral health is improved.
•  The posts restore stimulation to your jawbone, which puts a stop to bone loss. The posts help to preserve the strength of your jaw, preventing bone loss and keeping your healthy teeth in proper alignment.
