Halloween Candy and Teeth
Halloween is around the corner, and people everywhere are stockpiling candy for all your little Trick-or-Treaters. After all, Halloween and children go together. While candy is being purchased by your friends and neighbors, the children are planning costumes, potential tricks (if needed), but most of all how much candy will be gathered on Halloween. Even though distancing measures will be in place this year, we suspect there will still be plenty of fun and candy to be had.

Healthy Halloween?
Your kids enjoy seeing and eating all the goodies they received on Halloween, but as a parent, you want to make sure they keep cavities at bay! It is a conundrum. How can you allow the kids enjoy the Halloween festivities while making sure their dental health is maintained?

Candy Rations
You can help your kids by rationing the candy and explaining that by doing so they will be enjoy their candy treats for weeks to come! Your kids will enjoy being surprised by you with occasional treats in their lunches or an afterschool candy snack (that also includes healthy choices like apple slices or carrot sticks which actually help clean off teeth).

Halloween Healthy!
Even if you are not rationing the Halloween goodies for weeks to come, Halloween oral health can still be maintained. Remind your children to keep up their routine of brushing and flossing twice daily, and add in an extra brush, floss, rinse after they eat their treats. Make sure to provide fluoride toothpaste, and healthy and nutritious snacks to balance the added Halloween snacks. However, don't forget if you suspect oral health problems, call us for help, as well as don't forget regular check-ups!

A Child's Diet Can Prevent Cavities
A diet high in sugar, as we all know, causes cavities. But did you know that encouraging your child to consume certain types of food could help to prevent cavities? The most important foods for your child to eat are those that are high in fiber because of their saliva producing properties. The more saliva that a child produces, the higher the chances of bacteria being washed away. This can help to prevent cavities from occurring. Almost any type of fruit or vegetable will help the production of saliva, giving your child a large variety of delicious foods to choose from in order to keep the cavities at bay.

Does It Matter if a Child Has Crooked Teeth?
Some children have crooked teeth naturally, while other children have incredibly straight teeth as they grow. Does it matter which kind your child has? Yes, it does matter. Crooked teeth can be a problem and lead to issues with their oral health as they age. If you want your child to be as healthy as possible, then you want to speak with us about managing your child's crooked teeth.

Dangers of Crooked Teeth

Teeth that are crooked pose problems for people of all ages. First, it can lead to increased instances of cavities. When the teeth overlap, even a little, it can leave debris beneath the overlap. Even if your child is very careful about brushing properly, it can still happen. This could lead to needing fillings at a very young age. Second, it can also leave the teeth more susceptible to damage. When teeth are crooked, the teeth come down together differently. If the bite is not even, it can lead to more chips and cracks as children play and run around. Kids are naturally clumsy, so we want to avoid any extra reason for dental damage.

Crooked teeth can be managed effectively, with the right intervention. Call our office if you want to speak with us about what options can best help your child's specific situation. We will have you both come in, do a full examination, and let you know what our recommendations are to give them the best oral health possible.

Our treatment philosophy centers around each child's individual needs and concerns to create a gentle and caring approach that works for that child. We firmly believe that a positive, enjoyable dental experience will help children build confidence and knowledge that will create a lifetime of great dental health.
